The EZ bar is a specialty barbell designed to comfortably target your arms and can be found in most commercial gyms.
That being said, whenever you lift, you need to consider the starting weight of the bar you are using.
When it comes to an EZ bar, they generally weigh anywhere between 10 and 35 pounds or between 5 and 16 kilograms.
However, it does depend on the specific type of EZ bar that we're talking about, so let's take a look.
What Is an EZ Bar?
For those who are not familiar, an EZ curl bar is a special type of barbell that features an ergonomic shaft that is cambered in shape and specifically designed for biceps curls but it is also great for other exercises.
The different angles on an EZ bar at which you can hold it allow you to train various parts of your biceps muscles.
At the same time, because of the more ergonomically friendly design, they also put much less stress on your wrist than regular barbells.
What's pretty cool about the EZ bar is that it can also be used for many other types of exercises, such as skull crushers, back rows, upright rows, triceps extensions, shoulder presses, and more.
How Much Does an EZ Bar Weigh?
As we mentioned earlier, your typical Olympic EZ bar weighs anywhere from 10 to 35 pounds or 5 to 16 kilograms.
However, there are different types of EZ bars out there, and they can vary drastically in materials, length, thickness, and more.
As you can tell from the general weight description above, all of those factors can make a pretty big difference in terms of how much you're lifting.
Let's take a quick look at all of the main types of EZ bars and exactly how much they weigh.
Olympic EZ Bar
The Olympic EZ bar is one of the most common types of EZ curl bars out there, and they tend to be about 4 feet long and come with thick Olympic Sleeves and 1 1-inch bar shaft.
These are generally the heaviest type and can easily weigh up to 35 pounds with no weight added.
These are usually made out of high-quality and heavy materials such as steel to allow the user to add as much weight as they can lift.
The rotating Olympic sleeves are designed for heavy lifting and allow the weights to rotate to avoid injuring your wrists.
Standard EZ Bar
We then have the standard EZ bar, which is generally only found in home gyms as they are the cheapest option and tend to be the lightest.
These usually weigh between 10 and 15 pounds as they often have hollow bars making them lightweight.
As a result, they aren't able to be loaded up with as much weight as you can with an Olympic Ez bar.
Plus, they often use a spinlock system to keep the weight plates on the bar which is slower to change over weights which makes them less convenient for a commercial gym.
Their overall thickness and length tend to be about the same with a bar diameter of about 1 inch and a bar length of 4 feet long.
Super EZ Bar
You might be thinking the Super EZ bar looks just like the Olympic EZ bar we looked at first. You aren't wrong as the only real difference between the two is the angle to which the bar is bent.
The super EZ bar has extremely pronounced curves and bends, which allows you to perform more exercises that aren't as comfortable on the normal Olympic EZ bar.
Due to how similar the bars are, the specifications are roughly the same with a bar shaft of about 1 inch, 4 feet long, and weighs about 35 pounds.
Fixed EZ Bar
We then have the fixed EZ bar, which many people find to be the most convenient and why they are so popular in commercial gyms.
They have fixed weights on either side, as opposed to the ability to hold various plates. So they usually come in a set with a range of weights to choose from.
The weights on either end are usually coated in rubber, just for a bit of safety. Exactly how much these weigh depends on what they were designed to be and can range from 10 to 110 pounds, often going up in increments of 10 pounds.
An interesting note is that these are usually the thickest of all EZ bars, with a diameter of up to 31.75 millimeters, and they can be up to 49 inches long.
EZ Curl Attachment
We then have the EZ bar curl attachment for a cable machine. The bar itself usually weighs around 7 or 8 pounds,
This allows you to combine the benefits of the EZ curl bar with the convenience of a cable machine. These are around 1 inch in diameter and can be up to 30 inches in length.
Should You Count the Weight of an EZ Bar?
Of course, you should!
If you are taking the time to train then you are likely looking to improve and you should track the weight you are lifting to help confirm your progress.
Especially when you consider that the weight you will be lifting with an EZ bar won't be as heavy as a normal Olympic barbell, the weight of the bar will make up a large part of the overall weight.
If you're just getting started, the 35-pound EZ bar might be more than enough to train your biceps without the need for any added weights.
Just because it's a part of the bar and not the additional weights you place on the bar doesn't mean that the weight doesn't count.
The bottom line here is that an EZ bar can weigh up to 35 pounds, which is a significant amount of weight in addition to the plates that you might put on either side.
Don't forget, that every pound counts, and that includes the initial bar!
